Wrong
by Jana Aston
I have a history of picking the wrong guy. Gay? Player? Momma’s boy? Check, check and check.
Now I can’t stop fantasizing about one of the customers at the coffee shop I work at between classes. It’s just a harmless crush, right? It’s not like I ever see this guy outside of the coffee shop. It’s not like I’m going to see him while attempting to get birth control at the student clinic. While wearing a paper gown. While sitting on an exam table. Because he’s the doctor. Shoot. Me.
But what if, for once, the man I’ve had the dirtiest, most scandalous fantasies about turned out to be everything but wrong?

This was free on Kindle at some point and I got it. The idea of finding out that your crush is going to give you a pap smear intrigued me. There’s so many cringy and funny ways that can go. I needed a romantic comedy and so many of the reviews said that this one had them laughing out loud, so I wanted to read it. I don’t think I knew what I was walking into.
What did I walk into, you ask?
The most basic virgin/millionaire trope.
Alright, so Sophie works in a coffee shop and she has a giant crush on one of the customers who is NOT her boyfriend, but she is a 21-year-old college student and she’s ready to give up her V-Card to her boyfriend. There really isn’t a way to say those two sentences that doesn’t sound weird. Anyway, she goes to the health clinic to get birth control and her crush turns out to be the gynecologist working that day. Mortified, she still goes through with the appointment, getting so turned on that she orgasms during the exam. Kinda? I dunno. She says she does, but it’s described as a spasm in her vagina and it’s made out to be the most casual thing in the world. Are orgasms unassuming and casual? I feel there’s a lot to be noticed. Maybe I’m wrong. Anyway, moving on.
She goes out with her boyfriend for dinner before the big giveaway and Luke (the gynecologist crush) chases her boyfriend off for being a tool and then proceeds to take her to his home to sober up. Insert the giveaway anyway…after she’s sobered up, of course. No promises are made, it’s done, moving on. Except Luke can’t move on. So they start dating and having sex and she’s thrown into some rich-society-problems. There’s some ex-drama thrown in and a surprise or two.
Hmm. Ok.
I liked these characters for the most part. I appreciated that, while Sophie was a virgin, she wasn’t entirely ignorant. She was smart and kind, even if a little damaged from her childhood. She was level-headed about so many things. My biggest complaint is that she was upset by Luke’s job. Luke’s job was a fertility specialist. He helped women who had high risk pregnancies or trouble getting pregnant. She thought it was weird to meet his former patients. Why? I get the insecurities because she was his patient one time and now they were dating so she was scared it was a pattern, but honestly…this man helped couples have babies! Why on Earth are you treating him like what he does isn’t something to be commended? Plus, she was meeting them with their partners. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?! *Whew* Ok, outside of that, I was fine with her jealousy issues. I appreciated how she handled herself with his ex. As far as Luke goes, I liked him. He never lied to her. He never hid things from her to hurt her. He didn’t shove her away only to pull her back. (Every time there was distance between them, it was her doing, not his.) He didn’t fight his feelings for her. Yes, he was condescending sometimes, but I mean…okay. Everyone is condescending at some point, especially when talking about their specialty. He was a bit high-handed at times, but I feel like that comes with the millionaire trope. Every rich guy is high-handed. If you find one that isn’t, please send me that book title.
With characters and a plot so basic, was it set apart in any way?
Yes. It was funny. I’m not sure I've read many millionaire stories where the man had a sense of humor. These characters were playful together and that was very different in this trope for me. Also, Luke was likable and not entirely out of touch with reality. There also wasn’t any BDSM, which I can honestly say, I did not miss. It was refreshing even. Luke was a dirty talker and there was SPICE in this book, but there wasn’t mention of safe words, consent contracts, and such. And while I love consent being a spelled out thing, I enjoyed this story because I felt safe that Luke would never hurt Sophie. (I mean, sometimes things hurt so good, but you know what I’m saying.) He was dirty, but also kind and patient.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and I’ll read the rest of the series if it continues like this or better. I wanted more from this one in the sense that I felt Luke falling for Sophie more than the other way around, but still there wasn’t the connection built in the story that I would’ve preferred. Kinda common of these rich-guy-stories though. I think I could’ve read another 300 pages in this book and had it still work for me.
-SPOILERS-
I especially wanted more after finding out that Sophie was pregnant. I understood her reluctance fully. I understood her side. She was an accidental baby that changed everyone she cared about’s lives and not necessarily in the way that they would’ve wanted. I understood that she didn’t want to repeat the process. I understand that she didn’t even really know what the future held for her, let alone her with Luke, or especially her with a baby. That all made sense.
But I wanted to know more about Luke’s side. I adored that he thought that she knew and he was waiting for her to tell him. I loved that he was trying to give her the choice on so many things about it. I love that he had baby socks stored in his desk at work. But I wanted to know more about his history that would’ve brought him to where he was. Throwing out randomly that his ex had an abortion (that he didn’t want?) in a passing chapter was not what I needed. I really think this story could’ve been GREAT if there was some more from his POV. Not even a lot, but just enough to have a background. I loved that he never seemed unsure about her and maybe that would’ve been ruined if I was in his head, but he never really opened up to Sophie, so…I’m left a little bereft. Lol.
I also hate that Gina never got caught being a heinous bitch to Sophie. Or that hateful comment from his dad went without being acknowledged.
