Veils
by Brynne Asher

Gracie Cain is a healer. I'm Noah Jarvis, a cold-hearted killer.
We had one night. The best night. Then she thought she could strut out my front door and my life, right after announcing she was my best friend's baby sister.
"Give me a memory, Noah."
That's what she said ... right after she rendered me stupid in the shadows at a wedding reception. I did everything I could to figure her out. She wore more veils of armor than I've seen in a lifetime. On the outside, she was strong and self-assured. But within those beautiful, guarded blues? She was laced with vulnerability and grief.
She got the memory she wanted, but in the process, I was left branded.
When she ran, I had no choice but to follow. Not only did I go after her, I chased her halfway around the world. Because when it comes to her, one memory isn't enough. It doesn't matter that there couldn't be a more opposite pair than us.
But when my job came back to bite me in the ass, I wasn't the only one caught in the crossfire. It bought us memories no one was counting on.
That's when all the veils were ripped off.

I didn’t have a lot of “V”s as options on my A-Z Titles list, but I did have two by the same author. I’ve never read Brynne Asher before, but I giggled everytime I read her “mama club” warnings, and so I sent the two one-word titles to a friend and said pick one. I’m pretty sure that I saw Veils on a Tiktok which landed it on my TBR to begin with. It’s the 4th in the series though so I was nervous just jumping into it. For anyone else wanting to read it: it can be read as a standalone but it may ruin some surprises if you intend to go back and read the others afterward.
I have every intention of going back to read the rest of this series. My only issue is that Noah is EVERYTHING and I don’t see anyone topping him. My God.
This story is a weird combination of the movie "Taken" and romance. I'm not going to lie, the whole John Wick concept is sexy as hell to me. A man that is utterly LETHAL but absolutely yours. A man that will stop at nothing to be yours.
Noah is a badass, off-the-books assassin. He's at a friend's wedding, meets a woman, they have a one-night thing. They both know it's supposed to be one night. She's leaving the country the next day and he lives a secret life (doesn't lend to easy relationships). As she's leaving the next morning to head to where she's staying, he realizes that this woman is the baby sister of his (practically) best friend, the man that helped save his life and has had his back from day 1. He also realizes that he hasn't had nearly enough of her.
Noah, with resources at his disposal, follows her across the ocean for more time. He refuses to take no for an answer - which normally I am not for, however, I loved him. Sometimes one person just sees the future better than the other. He wiggles his way into her heart. When she's kidnapped, it's Noah who saves her. It's Noah who takes care of her while she recovers physically and mentally.
When it's revealed why she was kidnapped, it leads to a reckoning for Noah, but his love for her is constant.
Gracie has just a suitcase full of issues she's trying to work through before Noah even comes into play, but I found her still interesting, likable, and relatable. I was proud of her for trying to take control of her life, her strength in the face of so many hurdles, and for allowing herself to build something that scared her.
Why is he my new book boyfriend? I had a conversation about balancing sweet and spicy with a friend recently (because I’m obsessed with good guys and she’s not obsessed with the sweetness they bring): this one found the balance for me. Noah is ALL ABOUT Gracie from moment one. He says fucking beautiful things to her. He also murders a house full of people to save her. He takes her home and won't let her out of his sight. He's clingy in the best possible way and he says so many things that are just swoon-worthy. Not to mention, I adore a man that has the patience of a saint when he needs to and that pays attention to every single thing concerning his love interest.
The sex scenes could've been better in the aspects of details, but she created something for me that worked. There was nothing kinky about them, but they were hot and you just know that they COULD be kinky.
-SPOILERS-
I’d feel worse about telling you that she got kidnapped if it wasn’t the prologue of the book, lol. I’m not ruining anything.
The rest of the book, I’m not spoiling. There were cheesy or careless moments in it that I could pick apart, but I don’t want to. I enjoyed this book wholeheartedly. I read this so quickly that I surprised even myself. The hardest thing about this book was picking a quote to include below because I think I highlighted 34 passages…
Book 4 in the The Killers series | 321 Pages | Trope Challenge: Fling-to-Thing |

Talk about dying a slow death, walking the line of leaving her alone because I don’t want to hurt her and picking her up to fuck her so hard against the shower wall where neither one of us will see straight afterward is a tightrope I’m having a hard time balancing.
