That Second Chance

by Meghan Quinn

But it only took one rowdy night with my brothers to flip my world upside down. One unlucky encounter saddled us with a family curse and the promise of doomed relationships. I laughed it off immediately. “Yeah, right,” I thought. “A love curse. Ha!”

Boy, was I wrong.

Word spreads quickly in a town like mine; rumors about that night soon made us the most eligible yet untouchable bachelors in Port Snow, Maine. As a subject of endless gossip and speculation, I could kiss my dating life goodbye.

It would have stayed that way if Ren Winters, the new girl in town, hadn’t crashed into my life. Brave, beautiful, and smart—her vivacious thirst for a fresh start has given me hope that maybe, just maybe, I can have one too.

Everyone wishes for that second chance . . . but could this really be mine?

So, I had a 15 hour drive home from Georgia with MY MOM. Lol. She said to listen to whatever I wanted, but I couldn’t dive into another one like Sinner with her (which I listened to on the way down). There is a difference in me saying I read and listen to dirty books and anyone I know seeing or hearing HOW DIRTY those books are, lol. Anyway, Meghan Quinn seemed like a safe bet because I read Highland Fling and laughed my butt off. I even told my mom to read that one if she decided to bust into my book world.

In this one, Ren moves to this small town to take an Algebra teaching position. She’s recently recovered physically from a bad car accident and is still trying to heal mentally. Her mom was “mothering” her a bit too much in L.A., so she decided to move across the country. I think this book is set in Maine, if I remember right. Anyway, on her way to town, thanks to a “suicidal moose,” she ends up in another car accident. Griffin is the volunteer firefighter that helps her. Griffin is 100% the small town heartthrob. Lol. Just 1000%. He works in his parents’ fudge shop (which he’s slowly taking over), he has 3 brothers, he’s a volunteer firefighter, he helps out the whole town all the time. Why is he single? Griffin was “cursed” by a voodoo woman in Louisiana after a rambunctious brother outing and then lost his wife. So Ren and Griffin become friends in this small town and through a LOT of family meddling, fall in love and get together. Happily ever after.

#1) I curse. It doesn’t phase me. My mother, however, doesn’t enjoy cruising and these brothers have mouths like sailors. Lol. Honestly, it was the most accurate language I could’ve imagined for 4 grown brothers talking to each other and they were hilarious, but I swear part of me died each time knowing my mom was judging me. Lol.

#2) These characters are LIKABLE. I want to move to this town. It sincerely made me want to move to a northeastern small town and embrace that life. I’m considering our next vacation to be up there anyway. I loved this world, these characters…just all of it. It was so, so good. Ren was smart. She was kind and fun. She was witty and trying so hard to be fearless, like someone who is spreading their wings after an event. She wasn’t pushy or hateful to Griffin when he was having issues. She wasn’t manipulative. She was great. Griffin is so boy-next-door that it’s impossible not to like him. Obviously, he’s a bit nuts because he believes in a curse, but at the same time, he lost his wife and that gives him a pass. It hurt to see him blaming himself for it the whole book, but it was a good book.

#3) I do NOT read widow stories if I can avoid them. I didn’t realize this was one until the prologue had ended and I was already driving and couldn’t switch books a third time. For as much as I hate them, this one was pulled off well. Well enough that I can recommend it to other people.

#4) This book is still classic Meghan Quinn-humor, and it’s awesome.

New Girl in Town

“When you orgasm, the look on your face is super hot. Instead of being one of those guys who drop their mouths open and roll their eyes, you actually look sinister when you come. It’s really sexy.”
