Tents and Tights

by Molly O'Hare

Being fed up with never finding clothes in her size or worse, being sent to the maternity section, finally, Eve decided enough was enough and started her plus size boutique. Somewhere along the line, though, her shop led Eve to a friendship with the well-known owner of the famous outdoor adventure store in town. They were complete opposites in every way, but it worked. And even though she’d hate to admit it, he was by far the best friend she’d ever had.

Austin didn’t quite know how it happened. Four years ago, he walked into Own Your Curves to inquire about making plus size outdoor clothes for his shop. And the next thing Austin knew, he was best friends with the feisty, always kept him on his toes, pain in his backside woman. So when she asked for his guidance on expanding her shop, how could he tell her no? There was only one problem, as Austin helped Eve with the expansion, he couldn’t stop his imagination from running wild. Now, if he could just convince her to see it too…

Friendship could definitely end up being more, right?

I needed an author with an “O” last name and the colors of this cover plus the title lured me in. I enjoy a friends to lovers romance and curvy FMC so really, it started off already winning. This book was not KU but made me curious enough that I bought it.

Um, I’m sad that I bought it.

Ok, so the story is that the fit outdoorsman makes friends with a curvy indoorsy girl. He owns a sporting goods store, she owns a boutique, and he made a deal with her to sell her stuff at his store. They became best friends, despite their differences. She is ready to date so she’s on the dating apps and he realizes that his life is perfect with her in it, he doesn’t need to date. She starts a new business venture: plus size lingerie and ropes him into helping her with opinions and business savviness. He agrees as long as she goes camping/hiking with him. They go, get caught in the tent during a thunderstorm, and boom! Sexy time. The next day, she freaks out because it was probably nothing for him while he’s already daydreaming about them being together forever. And despite the fact that these characters are over 30, they don’t just talk to each other about it. It starts to come between them until he tells her the depth of his feelings. HEA.

I enjoyed the MMC. He was thoughtful in general, even if a bit aloof sometimes. He loved her and was kind to her and he was a good friend. He was confident in himself and what he liked. The FMC, well, she was not my favorite? I don’t know why we gotta write these curvy FMCs like this.

Aside from that, this author used repetitive phrases in this book ad nauseum. If you took out these phrases, the book would've been 100 pages shorter:

- "and I'm done" or "and I'm dead"

- "what you do to me"

- "that's not what best friends do" or "you aren't supposed to fall for your best friend"

- "I'll kill/murder you" or "I'm going to punch you in the balls"

Overall, the concept was cute, parts of the story were cute, but it was “eh”.

As the fire’s light danced upon her skin, he couldn’t hold back another second. “Eve, babe, look at me.”

“Yeah?” Eve’s head pivoted to face him, a lazy, radiant smile on her face.

“I’m going to kiss you.”
