Sweet Abandon

by Sarah Urquhart

Baker Bonnie Boone has had too many bikers dip their fingers in her butter cream. She’s done with them, but when a hot as hell biker rides into town, he slowly melts the single life she thought she wanted.

Easton Young, uncomfortable as a bear shifter in the city, hit the road in search of more of his own kind. His plans are delayed the moment he walks into Firebrook’s local bakery and smells his mate. Denying her will only cause them both pain.

She drops her guard, and he sees a home in her heart. But neither are willing to let go of their carefully laid plans, leaving their love in the dust, in sweet abandon.

This was a free book on Amazon and I needed a book written by an author with a last name starting with “U”. This was short, only 111 pages, I think. As always stated when I review novellas, I give them a grace that I don’t give long books because I’m aware the author is having to condense and cut corners. Something is going to have to vague: plot, background, character development, relationship building, world explaining…something.

This book is about Easton, a nomad, “lonewolf”, motorcycle-riding bear shifter who comes through Bonnie’s town. When he stops in at the bakery for some coffee on his way to meet some other bear shifters, he finds her…Bonnie…his mate. Bonnie is very adverse to motorcycle riding bad boys. Add in an unfortunate and unflattering initial meeting, Bonnie is especially determined to stay away from him. However, after some trouble (a car driving into the bakery), Easton lends a hand to help rebuild the place which puts him right under Bonnie’s nose until it’s done and gives him a chance to win her over. Afterall, rejecting your mate is not good for anyone. But, Easton doesn’t want or plan to stick around this small town and Bonnie doesn’t want to be left again.

This book took me a minute to get into which I mostly attribute to being in 3rd person. That always takes me some adjusting to before I’m just able to follow the story. But once I got my brain on board, this was a cute shifter novella. It’s pretty stereotypical but I feel like that’s not a bad thing when you’re trying to tell a story in 100 pages. You want the audience to be able to roll with it and throwing out surprises wouldn’t allow that.

Easton grew on me pretty quickly. He wasn’t my favorite type of guy, but he also was not an asshole. I feel like he showed a lot of character growth in the story. Bonnie…well, she was more frustrating. I understood her hesitations, but I didn’t like them. And then when the switch flipped, it just fucking flipped. It went from she didn’t understand and she was scared to she realized she was wrong all along in like 1 page.

“If you move, I’ll pin you back beneath me in less than a moment. I don’t care who’s calling you.” Deep brown shone in his eyes. “Take me inside you, sweetheart. I’m all yours.”
