Promise Me Forever

by Layla Hagen

As a divorced single father, I live by three rules:

1. Make sure every day my daughter, Paisley, knows she’s number one in my life. No. Matter. What.

2. Keep contact with my cheating ex-wife to a minimum.

3. Turn Maxwell Wineries into a legacy that keeps Paisley set for life.

When I hire Lexi to look after my daughter, I realize I need another rule: don’t pursue Paisley’s nanny.

But even if I had that rule it wouldn’t matter. Because I'm breaking it already.

A different book in this series was sent to me by a friend because it was on her list and I was lost at sea in search for something. The one she sent wasn’t my favorite storyline or wasn’t what I wanted at the time, but I went through the series and this one was the one I chose. This was my first Layla Hagen story even though I see them all the time.

I liked it. It was very similar to a Hallmark movie with some better steam and a bit of spice. The FMC is an elementary teacher that takes a nanny job for the summer. The MMC is the single dad of the child and a winery owner. Both characters are likable as can be. Both love their families entirely. Tate is a fucking fantastic dad. His grandmother and five or six brothers were hilarious. Lexi loves her parents so much and she’s incredibly tender-hearted. This story had such little angst, the change from lust to love was quite simple.

My biggest complaint is that everything in this story felt like an overview. It’s like if you took a 600 page book and shoved it down to 290. The sexy scenes were sexy, but not descriptive enough for my taste. The relationship built, but you know you’re missing key parts. (But for me, that’s EXACTLY how Hallmark movies feel.) He loved talking to her, but based on the conversations I read, I didn’t understand. He felt this awesome connection, but based on the few interactions, I wasn’t connecting.

It’s a good book. If you need a palette cleansing type love story, this one would be good. It still managed to make me feel all kinds of things even though it was as light as it was. His ex-wife was the source of drama in the story, but NOT in an OW or jealous type of way which I feel like is incredibly abnormal and I loved that.

Unfortunately, I didn’t write this review until I’d invested my time in other books and this one doesn’t have much that stands out to remember it. I remember enough to know that I wanted to read more of them.

Trope Challenge:

Nanny

“And what do you love to eat?”

His eyes glazed over, and at first, I thought he hadn’t heard my question. But then he brought his mouth to my ear. “Right now, you. I want my mouth on you until I make you squirm and come and cry out my name.”
