Kings of Chaos

by Eva Ashwood

I was a good girl once, but now I dance with devils.

Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. I wear vengeance like a suit of armor.

I’ve got a list with six names on it. Six people who wronged me, who hurt me, who took everything from me. Six people who turned me into the monster I am now.

And I’ve crossed off every name but one.

One more name. One more death. Should be simple, right?

Yeah, you’d think so. But it turns out revenge is a messy business, and when I end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, I royally piss off four brutal, twisted, gorgeous men.

Gage, Priest, Ash, and Knox.

Lucky for me, the last name on my list is someone they’ve got their own grudge against, so instead of killing me, they offer me a deal. They’ll give me a chance to exact my vengeance, and in exchange, all they want is…

Me.

I’m not stupid. I’ve played this game before. Even though they've agreed to help me, I know they want to punish me too. They want to toy with me. To let their demons loose on me.

But maybe these Kings of Chaos have let my pretty face fool them.

Because I'm just as vicious as they are. And I’ve got demons of my own.

I’ve been wanting to read an Eva Ashwood book but most of them are bully and so I’ve hesitated. After Sabotage, honestly I feel pretty fucking brave because it couldn’t possibly be more intense for me that that. (Note: I am correct, so far.)

Anyway, so I read Den of Vipers earlier this year and this book seemed like a less-for-shock-value version of that. I thought the plot was more strong, the relationships were equally as not-built, and the scenes were mirrors (just with softer lighting). It’s almost like if I read Den of Vipers and took out the bits that made me unhappy and made them better. Is the book better overall? I don’t know. It’s not that clear.

River and her sister were given to a crime group as repayment for her father’s debt as teenagers. For a year they were tortured and assaulted. Hannah doesn’t make it out and River swears revenge. There are six names she plans to cross off her list and she’s down to the last one. When a lead to get him goes belly up, she kills the man who gave her said lead…behind the Kings’ club. They take her home, lock her up, and try to get answers from her. Turns out that River’s enemy is their enemy so they force her to live with them until she’s completed the job. Forced proximity and all, banging happens. This is the first book in a series and does leave off on a cliffhanger.

Ok, so for comparison purposes: Knox = Diesel, Gage = Ryder, Priest = Garrett, and Ash = Kenzo.

Anyway, so what does this book improve on for me? There’s a dog. Lol. I like it. There are no foreign objects shoved into her vagina. Knox isn’t as bonkers as Diesel (he is as brutal). Priest has a much more compelling issue for me than Garrett did. River doesn’t annoy me NEAR as much as Roxy did. River is attracted to these men and she’s like, ‘I’m gonna live it up and cause some chaos while I’m here’. River doesn’t throw the tantrums that Roxy did and her obsession with shoes isn’t a pair of boots that every other badass woman has. Lol. This book has more consent in it than DoV did. I like this plot better. I like River having a vendetta, not just being caught up in the men’s world.

What do I like less? That it’s a four book series, lol. I’m so bad at series.

Criticisms, not comparisons: There is a LOT of sex. We all know that I enjoy the shit out of sex scenes but there isn’t a relationship established for any of these people. They do begin helping each other through things and that’s great, but there’s still no connection for me. I appreciate Gage helping River get out of her head, but even still, there aren't feelings there. I like that she helps patch Knox up and they have similar interests (i.e. torturing people and bloody sex), but I don’t feel any feelings between them, even though Knox is pretty clear that he has them.

I think Priest is probably the one that I like the most simply because he doesn’t know how he feels about her and I can appreciate that because I also feel like he doesn’t know how to feel about her. LOL.

Will I continue this series? Yes, I believe I’ll finish it, but I’m not going to right now.

“You’re so fucking addictive,” he says, voice low. I swallow hard at his tone. “How the fuck am I supposed to not want you? You’re fierce as hell, strong as a fucking warrior, and you come so perfectly when I take you apart.”
