Existence

by Abbi Glines

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course.

Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him.

Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.

Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.

He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

I read this book years ago and loved the series. It’s a YA story so no sexy times and I feel like I should point that out up front, lol. Abbi Glines is such a sweet writer to me, but she’s definitely more on the 16-year-old-love-story line.

In this story, Pagan is a high school girl who can see ghosts, the souls of people who have died but haven’t moved on. One day, a ghost shows up that’s a bit different from the others. For example, he pops up whenever he wants and he can talk to her. After getting into a fight with a guy at school, Pagan has a car accident. The ghost comes to her hospital room each night and stays with her and sometimes plays her a lullaby. She falls for this ghost even as she starts dating a guy at school. Then one night, she sees a car accident and when that ghost comes to collect the dead people from the car, she realizes he’s more than a soul (which he’d already told her). She goes a bit batty and has to go to a home for the mentally disturbed. Blah, blah, she eventually realizes that he is Death when another non-human entity tries to kill her.

This is very much a highschool, YA book and it’s absolutely a series. Granted, you could deal with this ending if you chose to, but it’s really just the beginning of the story.

Um, Dank is enjoyable. Pagan is…mostly enjoyable. From purely a first book standpoint, my biggest issue with Pagan is that she pulls Leif into the fuckery because she won’t let him go. He’s comfortable and available and so she just keeps leading him along. Also, I read this book back when I didn’t mind single POV and now that’s a lot harder.

I’m not sure that there’s much to say about this one. If you liked Twilight, this is about the same age range.

“You tempt me. I can't be tempted. I'm not made to be tempted, but you, Pagan Moore, you tempt me. From the moment I came for you I was drawn in. Everything about you..." One of his hands left my waist and moved up to gently caress my arm. "You make me crazy with need. With want. I didn't understand it at first. But now I know. It's your soul calling to me. Souls mean nothing to me. They aren't supposed to. But yours has become my obsession.”
