Break the Rules

by Roxie Noir

She’s my best friend’s kid sister.

Only she’s not a kid any more.

As a forest ranger, I believe in the simple life. I prefer cabins to apartments, trails to freeways, and trees to people. My life is orderly, predictable, and quiet.

Until it’s hit by a woman I never saw coming — Hurricane June.

She’s fierce. She’s feisty. She has a laugh like the first day of spring, and she’s so pretty that I can’t breathe when I look at her. June will only be in town for a few months — just while job-hunting. She won’t last until winter, but how can I resist?

Except I have to. She’s my best, oldest, and most loyal friend’s baby sister.

Betraying him would be the worst thing I’ve ever done. Not betraying him might be the hardest.

Especially once we start working together on a secret project. All this spending time together, sneaking around at night, and lying to her brother about what we’re doing sure feels like more than friendship.

June might break my heart. Her brother might break my nose.

But I guess some things were made to be broken.

Story Score: 8/10

Rating: 5/5

I found and read this book years ago along with all it’s companions and I absolutely love all the Loveless brothers. Roxie Noir creates my favorite characters and the banter in them is what I live for. One of my best friends in the world decided she was ready to start reading again and obliged me by offering to read some of my favorites. I never know where to place people on the smut scale, so these are generally my starting point. I’ve read them all more than once, but I told her when she got to number 3, I would read it with her. (Levi and Caleb are my favorites.)

As far as non-fantastical (in the fantasy sense) book boyfriends go: Levi Loveless is my #1. He is. He has been since I first found him and no matter how many more books I read, he remains everything. He’s independent, the strong silent type, smart, passionate, considerate…and I’m fine with him leaving marks on me anytime he wants.

Wait. What? Moving on.

On the trope list: this one gets my ‘Brother’s Best Friend’ slot.

I am not an outdoorsy person. Don’t get me wrong, I think nature is downright gorgeous, however I don’t like unregulated temperatures, I hate sweating, bugs are not my friend, and much like Violet, poison ivy is my enemy. Even knowing all of that, the author created a story so perfect that it makes me WANT to start hiking and camping and generally being in nature. Levi makes you want to experience his world with him because he enjoys it so much. You want to feel his peace, his solitude, his strength. Spice-wise: Levi isn't the dirtiest of the Loveless brothers (really Eli, Caleb, and Seth are all spicier), but he's the package I want.

Violet is so relatable that I want to be her friend. Every time she makes a decision, even if you don’t agree with it, you understand it. You hope she figures it out.

The sibling relationships in this book are fucking beautiful. The Loveless Brothers will make you want to have a whole hoard of kids or they’ll make you want to marry into one. Silas and Violet are wonderful and remind me so much of me and my brother that I smile at them constantly.

I really don’t have much of a review for this book. It’s my favorite.

If you like good guys, if you need something that will heal your soul a little between all those dark romances, if you enjoy intelligent banter and characters that are genuinely knowledgeable and funny: read this book.

Brother's Best Friend

“Do you realize that we’ve fucked in every position I can think of, every possible configuration of two bodies, and every time still feels brand new?” he asks.
