Beautifully Cruel

Alpha (noun):

1) Having the highest rank in a dominance hierarchy

2) The most powerful man in a group

3) Liam Black

He was a stranger to me, a dark and dangerous presence who materialized from the shadows one rainy night to save me from a vicious attack. I didn’t know his name or where he was from. All I knew was that the only place I’d ever felt safe was in his arms.

But safety is an illusion.

And not every savior is a hero.

And—as I’d soon find out—having an alpha save your life comes with a price.

Liam Black wanted something from me in return.

I bought this on Audible with the intention to listen to it while I drove but ended up talking on the phone so much that I ended up listening to it at work. This review is going to be short.

Liam is an enigmatic customer where Tru is a waitress. They talk briefly. Tru is attacked, Liam saves her, turns out he is the “mafia Pope”. He makes her a deal to stay with him for 28 days, then go their separate ways. Tru knows that she can’t do that, so she tells him no. They still end up fucking and then he refuses to let her go. She throws a fit, but eventually decides that she wants to spend this month with him. They do, until she’s sent home 3 days too early, with no explanation. Twist, turn, HEA.

#1) The Audible does NOT do this book justice. I’m pretty sure if I was actively reading it, instead of passively listening to it, I would’ve LOVED this book and been a puddle. I learned my lesson, I think. It didn’t help that he has an Irish accent and she has a southern accent. Her accent gave me more trouble than his, but anyway.

#2) This book wasn’t as smutty as Ruthless Creatures unless I really tuned that out. If I did, someone tell me. I will dig back through those pages and FIND IT.

#3) Tru was a freethinking lady and I liked that so, so much. I think if I wasn’t listening to that southern accent and cringing the whole time, I would’ve really liked her.

#4) Liam wasn’t anything special to me, but I didn’t dislike him at all. He was fine. He just didn’t hit any of my fun buttons the way book boyfriends do.

#5) My score of 4 is bumping it up because I'm sure it's better to read than listen to, but as I experienced it, it's giving some grace.

-SPOILERS-

I’m a wee bit confused because I got busy working, but I think Liam was a double agent. He started out wanting to take does the mafia and then ended up committing a thousand crimes while doing it. I love that Killian is his identical twin and he’s taking over though. Lol. I will read his book. I’m excited for it.
