A Lie for a Lie

by Helena Hunting

Sometimes I need an escape from the demands, the puck bunnies, and the notoriety that come with being an NHL team captain. I just want to be a normal guy for a few weeks. So when I leave Chicago for some peace and quiet, the last thing I expect is for a gorgeous woman to literally fall into my lap on a flight to Alaska. Even better, she has absolutely no idea who I am.

Lainey is the perfect escape from my life. My plan for seclusion becomes a monthlong sex fest punctuated with domestic bliss. But it ends just as abruptly as it began. When I’m called away on a family emergency, I realize too late that I have no way to contact Lainey.

A year later, a chance encounter throws Lainey and me together again. But I still have a lie hanging over my head, and Lainey’s keeping secrets of her own. With more than lust at stake, the truth may be our game changer.

Another Audible freebie of an author I’d never read/listened to, yet wanted to.

RJ is headed to Alaska to go on a fishing trip(?) with his brother. His brother can’t go at the last minute, so RJ is left going alone. He meets Lainey on the plane. They have a fun summer and then RJ has to leave for a family emergency. They don’t have a way to reach each other due to some dumb luck. Then they meet again in Chicago, where RJ is the captain of an NHL team - which he lied about while in Alaska. Annnnd now he has a kid with Lainey, so he learns. And he tries and tries to win her over.

The story was fine. It wasn’t angsty, which I always appreciate. RJ was a previous manwhore who, after a few fake pregnancy attempts, had given up his whoring ways. Not my favorite type of hero, but RJ was quite pleasant. I liked that he wasn’t afraid to try…and keep trying. Lainey was also fine. Everything about this book was fine. I don’t really have anything bad to say about it, but I’ve since read several others and there is nothing that is still holding this one close to my chest. At the same time, I do remember quite a lot about it, so it wasn’t forgettable.

On a smut scale, this one is low. They had sex. Some of it was on page, but it wasn’t descriptive. It didn’t have me staring into space, biting my nails, and unable to concentrate. Which is obviously my preferred response. I’m kinda starting to think that listening to them may hinder my experience of the book. I’ve gotten better about being able to listen to them well enough to follow the story, but maybe that’s as far as I’ve gotten.

-SPOILERS-

I disliked Lainey’s parents so much in this story and I’m FURIOUS that nothing was ever said about how shitty they were. Lainey’s mother just needed to be put in her place and I’m mad about it. She was a bitchy, manipulative, controlling…bitch. Whatever. She was way too high and mighty and mean. The fact that everyone just kind of obliged her until she settled down was bullshit. I’m the first person that will admit that I couldn’t parent without my parents. I lean on them so much. But you do not need people in your life that are constantly questioning or disagreeing with your choices, trying to control your life, and who just insert themselves into every situation.

Anyway, I’m glad Lainey didn’t keep Kodi a secret for long. I’m not good at those books. I’m glad her neighbor didn’t turn out to be a stalker because I really thought that was coming.
